Creeping Someone Out 101 (Part One Of Two)

By Scot McKay Have you ever been out on a date and things were just a little, welloff? There was just some "vibe" in the air that was decidedly causing you to be having no fun whatsoever. I think you know exactly what I mean. Maybe you just couldn't quite put a finger on just what it was that was making you uncomfortable, but you had a feeling your instincts just couldn't be lying to you. THENit happenedeither your date said something or did something that just broke things wide open. And you couldn't wait to get OUT. What happened? You had the classic case of the "heebie-jeebies", that's what. This factor is a major cause of bad dates everywhere and any discussion thereof promises to be way too complex to fit in a single newsletter. As such, this is the first in a two-part series. So how do we define being "creeped out" anyway? Check this out: hee‧bie-jee‧bies  - [hee-bee-jee-beez] noun (used with a plural verb ) Slang. A condition of extreme nervousness caused by fear, worry, strain, etc.; the jitters; the willies (usually prec. by the): "Just thinking about ghosts gives me the heebie-jeebies." [Origin: 190510, American; rhyming compound coined by W. De Beck (18901942), American comic-strip cartoonist] I don't care if the term was coined by a comic-strip cartoonist, it's not funny. When the above happens, YOU my friend have been CREEPED OUT. Gnarly. It's bad enough to have been "creeped out" on a date or two in your life. What's even worse is if you happen to have been the one who is DOING the creeping. Have you ever thought of that? I think everyone fully realizes when he or she is being creeped out. But who genuinely realizes when they are the ones who are coming off as creepy? Unfortunately, my guess is almost nobody. So how do you get a handle on this? Well, if you have been going on a lot of first dates that don't turn in to second dates this topic is worth a hard look. If you are going on a lot of first dates that seem to start well and somewhere take a turn for the worse mid-stream this topic is worth an even harder look. And this holds true no matter what gender you are. Yes ladies-guys can and do get fully creeped out also. There are a "dirty dozen" factors that have a very high probability of giving your date the "willies". Today, let's cover the first half: 1) Space Invaders Standard procedure here is, of course, eighteen inches of space between you and a stranger. On a first date situation you absolutely, positively want to honor that. There is nothing creepier than someone who is getting way too close too quickly. When seated at a restaurant or a movie (which I hope all who are reading are sensible enough to avoid on a first date), be sure not to crowd the space there either, generally speaking. Oh yes, and avoid invading space for the rest of the date also until you are sure there is chemistry. Then start with hand holding, please. 2) Touchy-feelies This factor, although similar to the first, is decidedly different. Recently I was asked about how to greet a person you are meeting for the first time on a first date. My recommendation is not to push for a hug, while remembering that handshakes on dates are lame also. Guys, if a woman offers a handshake when you first meet her, do us all a favor and either tease her for it or grab the hand and lift it to your mouth, kissing the back of your own hand instead. Anything but a handshake. To be honest, nobody ever said you had to touch someone as soon as you meet him or her, although you wouldn't know this given the number of men in particular who want to grab women's hands and not let go, hug them, rub shoulders and all sorts of other invariably creepy things. Perhaps the concept of not having to touch someone upon meeting them will be tremendously freeing for you. Guys, wanting to touch and/or hold onto women you barely know is a bad idea all the time. I've even known men who meet a woman, take her hand and proceed to play with her fingers and what not during the entire (brief) time he is talking to her. Wow. Creepy. 3) Eccentricities You know, it's true that individualism is a good thing. Most of us like someone who isn't generic. That makes this point a particularly difficult one to convey effectively. Yet, I'm going to try. Essentially, if you are wearing, saying or doing something that almost nobody else does, the chances are good that you are creeping dates out. If this applies to you and you aren't getting any dates at all, so much more so the probability. For example, some women wear black nail polish. That's individualistic. Almost no men do, especially if they are dressed normally otherwise. That would be creepy. See what I mean? In case you don't, here's another example. Some people use the word "famously" instead of "fantastically". It's actually somewhat unusual for a woman to do so, maybe saying, "You and I are going to get along famously." I actually find that usage of the word endearing. Now if she punctuated every sentence with "famously", that would be creepy. 4) Disgusting Habits One time a woman told me that she gave a date her business card at dinner and he proceeded to clean his fingernails with it while they were talking. Gross. There are an endless supply of examples here, most of which would be self-explanatory. But here are some ideas anyway. Don't spit while a date. Ever. Especially at your date. Say it, don't spray it, okay? Please wash your hands after going to the lavatory. Don't pick at the back of your pants or your crotch (guys especially). If you haven't ever studied table manners, chances are yours need work. Get a book and learn. And for heaven's sake, use a Kleenex. 5) Strange Nervous Habits Fidgets, funny laughs, rubbing hands, etc. all classify as such. Most nervous habits are as individual as the person performing them, but they invariably make the other person equally nervous. So stop it. Not only are weird nervous idiosyncrasies creepy, they convey an utter lack of confidence. That's a tough "double whammy" to overcome when trying to attract someone, right? Pay particular attention to the "vibrating leg" thing that often happens when seated. You know, when you just have to bounce your leg up and down for no reason. Stop that. 6) Fishy-eyed Stares OK, here it is. Yes, "eye-contact" is a good thing when showing someone you are interested. Please, however, be sure to actually look away sometimes. And do us all a favor and BLINK, finally, will you? This point holds true whether you are on a date or in any social setting, actually. One time while I was still working in the IT world, I was at a business meeting of about 15 or 20 people all seated around a big table. I looked over at one point and my boss was giving me the glazed-over fisheye treatment. I'm not sure if he was just so bored he had simply lapsed into Neverland or what, but the impact on me was significant enough that I still remember it. Eeesh. So there are a half-dozen sure-fire ways to creep out your date (or anyone, for that matter). Note that the six we discussed today are tied to actions and/or appearance. Next time, we'll hit a half-dozen points related to the words you use. Copyright 2006 X & Y Communications Want to hear more? Fitness Scams

By Tracie Johanson Caveat emptor is Latin for "let the buyer beware". Nowhere is this phrase more applicable than in the weight loss industry of today. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. From miracle pills to the latest fad diet, the gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous.....even deadly. Caveat emptor indeed! -> A PRIME SUSPECT? As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous 'maybe'. "The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users' blood pressure, the group contended." (Source: www.cnn.com) Recently the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia. -> ANOTHER PRIME SUSPECT? Ephedra was banned in the United States last year, in part due to numerous deaths attributed to this popular weight loss supplement. On April 14, a federal Judge in Utah reversed the short-lived ban on ephedra. Within minutes, spammers were filling our email boxes with messages to BUY BUY BUY before ephedra was banned again. One of these spammers, on their website, states that "Finally, the forbidden fat-burning herb banned for being 'too effective' Ephedra is available to the public again". We're not going to quote the source on this one because we don't want to give this guy any free publicity. Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use..... -> MORE EXAMPLES "The Advertising Standards Authority in Great Britian has ordered L'Oreal to pull ads for an anti-cellulite cream. The board found that claims as to the effects and timeliness of the skin treatment were misleading and could not be backed up by any research. The ads featured Claudia Schiffer and L'Oreal has agreed to make changes to the advertisements." (Source: www.adjab.com) For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: "Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they'd tried in the previous year." (Source: www.cnn.com) -> THE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware) is indeed the rule when it comes to many weight loss gimmicks. However, there is one weight loss method that has never been banned, has never led to an investigation, and has never been been listed on a 'whistleblower' fraud report: EXERCISE. Exercise is the only path to health and fitness that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than diets or drugs ever will. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being! Instead of looking for another short-cut to weight loss success, choose the proven method that gets results. Choose exercise. * Copyright 2005 Pick Up The Pace. The Truth About Diet Myths

By Anthony Burlay, M.D. How do we know what we know? Often, our knowledge comes from through repetition and stories. In childhood, we call them fairy tales or bedtime stories. They amuse or entertain and have with the occasional moral lesson. However, as adults these stories or myths can be harmful when we start making decisions based on their often inaccurate information. This often happens in food choices, especially when it comes to losing weight. Through repetition, even incorrect information can permeate our thoughts and get in the way of weight loss goals. The problem is, many ideas or stories surround weight loss get repeated so often, they become believable. Lets examine the science behind some of this folklore: Myth #1: Initial weight loss on diet plans comes from a loss of water weight. There is no water storage gland in the human body that empties upon dieting. The proponents of this fallacy usually argue that the breakdown of glycogen in the liver, a common occurrence in the body of a dieter, causes a release of water. The human liver weighs about 3 pounds and glycogen accounts for only about 10% of this. So, water from the liver could only contribute to less than half a pound loss, and thats if all of its weight were water. The fallacy mongers further suggest that the breakdown products of fat metabolism release water. However, for the technically minded, most of these chemical reactions actually use water initially, rather than release it. Myth #2: Skipping meals is a practical way to lose weight. When you skip a meal, your body uses stored sugar molecules which have been converted to glycogen. These stores are in the liver and muscle tissue. Once these are gone, your body turns to other nutrient sources for its constant energy needs. After skipping a meal under this circumstance, your body shifts into a fasting metabolism which leads to protein breakdown. If you are eating according to evolutionary guidelines, that is, the right combination of foods for your bodys design, you would actually break down fat, rather than protein, by NOT skipping lunch. Myth #3: The Food Pyramid is a good way to eat to maintain a healthy weight. The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the Food Pyramid in 1980 and released an updated version in early 2005. The Pyramid advocates a diet with plenty of breads, cereals, rice, pasta, vegetables, and fruits. However, decisions about food choices are much more complex than following a list of recommended foods. Our food choices are the result of a combination of body signals, cultural influences, habits, events, people, emotions, and beliefs. Since the introduction of The Food Pyramid, obesity has become of pandemic proportion. It seems economically driven agricultural promotion is not serving public health. Myth #4: Eating a low fat diet is the best way to lose weight. Low fat diets have been advocated for the last 20 years and the fat content of the American diet has actually decreased slightly during this time, but the obesity rate has more than doubled. Why? Part of the reason is that a low fat diet is not the correct fuel mix for the way the human body was designed. Over millions of years of evolution, our metabolic pathways developed. The original diet consisted mostly of available vegetation, seasonally limited fruits and nuts, and foods rich in protein and fat. Myth #5: Counting calories is essential to healthy eating and weight loss. The human body needs about 11-12 calories per pound of weight a day to maintain its current weight. For a 200 pound person, this would be approximately 2400 calories. Approximately 3500 calories are eaten for every pound of body weight. So, to lose 10 pounds, a dieter would have to eat 35,000 less calories. It would follow, that by eating 500 less calories a day, it would take over two months to lose those 10 pounds. However for most people, this significant calorie restriction is uncomfortable, and unsustainable. For anyone who has tried a reduced calorie diet, they are familiar with how difficult this way of life can be. What do you do when, at 5 PM all the days calories are gone and you are still hungry? The body processes various nutrients differently. It is not necessarily the total amount of food eaten that leads to weight loss or gain. It is the proportion of various nutrients and the shift to fat burning metabolism that is important. Unfortunately, competing interests rely on these facts and help perpetuate their existence. To lose weight, you must inform yourself of how your body evolved and your bodys process of metabolism if you want to know how you should eat and how to lose weight. Believing diet myths will only keep you in the cycle of the serial dieter. Board Certified Psychiatrist, Dr. Anthony J. Lower Blood Pressure For The Lifestyle - Challenged

By David O'Hara Do you want a lifestyle prescription or do you want lower blood pressure? "Lose weight! Exercise! Stop eating junk from fast food joints!" Don't you get tired of hearing it sometimes? Sure, we all know the importance of a healthy lifestyle, especially for keeping our blood pressure under control. But a lot of "experts" don't seem to live in the real world. Shifting a hundred pounds doesn't happen overnight. And what about the sales rep or the truck driver stuck behind the wheel 10 hours a day? What if you're a desk jockey putting in overtime to put bread on the table? (and wouldn't you know it? healthy fare is often more expensive than junk food!) Or what if you simply enjoy one or two guilty pleasures? In the past, if you were "lifestyle-challenged" you didn't have any encouraging prospects for dealing with hypertension. You could go the medical route and test-drive a dizzying array of powerful prescription medicines. Success (for your doctor, anyway) would come with just the right drug and dosage to keep you perched between hypertension and intolerable side effects. These could be anything from mildly annoying to life-altering (particularly for the gents!). Or you could go the alternative route: every few months you take up the latest natural miracle everyone is raving about. You get your hopes up only to discover sooner or later that it does nothing at all for you. But hey, there's always another one coming along just in time. And so it goes I was once a serial herb and supplement user myself. At least natural remedies are (usually) safe and free of side effects. On the other hand, they can be even more expensive than prescription drugs! So what are you to do? Try not to fret about it too much, for one thing, or it might raise your blood pressure even further! But on the positive side, finally, there's a natural method that's proven to work consistently regardless of your level of hypertension, your medications or your lifestyle. This method is truly different because you don't consume anything. Nor is it time consuming, tedious or strenuous and, best of all, you can even do it for free. It's called slow breathing and it only takes 15 minutes a day. Now, for those inevitable few who may be thinking: "Oh no! Not another flaky alternative therapy" let me assure you that slow breathing is the first natural method clinically proven to lower high blood pressure. Its success has been verified repeatedly in randomized, double-blind trials the same kind of testing as used for drugs. Slow breathing is simple, like most things in life that really work. The technique involves just two things: 1) breathing slowly and deeply at a rate below 10 breaths per minute (around 6 per minute is ideal), and 2) extending your exhale phase to about twice the length of your inhale. Then there's one other vital ingredient: relaxation. The more relaxed you are, the greater the benefits. Breathing in this way while in a state of deep relaxation for 15 minutes a day is proven to reduce high blood pressure. One session alone has been shown to drop blood pressure 20 to 30 points, although the effects after just once would be temporary. However, if you continue to practice it the effects are cumulative and become long-lasting after several weeks of slow breathing. Lasting reductions of up to 50 over 20 have been documented. Of course, counting your breathing for 15 minutes is about as relaxing as watching paint dry. Fortunately, that's not the way you have to do it. A new method called Breatheasy combines a synthesized guided breathing soundtrack with beautiful, relaxing music. The music together with the breathing track is incredibly relaxing. There's no "stalker in the bushes" effect to the breathing because the sound is natural but not human; it was developed from the sound of an ocean wave. The breathing track provides an easy way to follow and learn the right breathing pattern while relaxing to the music. You have to have the breathing because blood pressure reduction from relaxation alone tends to be only temporary. So finally there's an easy, quick and reliable way to lower blood pressure, regardless of your circumstances. I can't imagine anyone without 15 minutes a day, even those too lazy to exercise and develop a healthy lifestyle people like me! Of course, this is not intended to advocate a neglect of healthy living and personal responsibility. But you can depend on slow breathing to produce quick results while struggling for a better lifestyle and the long-term health benefits that brings. Heck, slow breathing is great for fit and healthy people too! In addition to lowered blood pressure it also reduces stress and anxiety, improves your sleep and offers a host of related benefits. And, crucially, it puts control of a vital aspect of your health into your own hands - and this is something at the very heart of a healthy lifestyle approach. Finally, we should also recognize that high blood pressure has many causes and lifestyle is not always at fault. That's something you won't often hear elsewhere. When I was battling hypertension I finally discovered that my lifestyle had nothing to do with it. And slow breathing was the only thing that worked for me in the end. Asset vs. Liability

By Robert Serina For most people the idea of asset vs. liability is a blur. It often becomes more confusing when you go to your banker. When you go to the bank to get a loan, your banker asks you to list your assets as collateral to insure you can pay back the money they are about to lend you. What is most commonly listed.... house, car, jewelry... This is the single most significant idea that keeps the middle class from becoming wealthy. They purchase long term debt items such as cars and jewelry as their earned income increases, by allowing you to list items that do not bring any kind of revenue into your cash flow your banker is contributing to the chance you are going to default. It is this idea that generates many other problems with a persons cash flow. Those that are financially literate understand that an asset is something that puts money into your pocket each month, regardless if you work or not. Such as properly managed rental property or managed businesses. A liability is something that takes money out of your pocket every month, weather you work or not. This is anything with monthly payments but usually a house, car, or other luxury. If you get a raise and spend that extra money on something that locks you into an agreement to pay X amount of dollars for X amount of years, then you really have fallen into the middle class trap. By not investing your money into assets you have agreed to continue working for money. Now that you understand the differences between these two concepts you should re-evaluate your current financial status. Do you indeed have assets or do you have a long term debt obligation for liabilities? Some people will still argue that they can sell their car or their house to produce a revenue. They are correct but until the point they sell their liabilities off they are not assets and should not be confused with one. With those ideas in mind we can now resolve many of the problems in the cash flow patterns of the poor and middle class. The next step to becoming wealthy is to understand the three basic cash flow patterns. After WLS: Surgical Thigh Lift

By Kaye Bailey Our LivingAfterWLS frequent contributor and my good friend Kim Stover underwent a surgical thigh lift yesterday. She is home today recovering nicely and has found a way to use the computer laying down. For the next two weeks she must lay down or stand, she cannot be in a sitting position. I look forward to update from her soon. Though not often talked about a thigh lift is a common procedure following massive weight loss. For women it is biologically naturally to carry much fat in the thighs so when weight is lost excessive loose skin remains. Also called a leg lift, the reconstructive surgery removes the loose, hanging skin in the thigh and buttocks. The procedure is intended to tighten and firm these areas, improving overall body contour. The 2-4 hour surgery removes lax skin and fat and places the scars in locations that can be hidden within the bikini line. Commonly during a leg lift, an incision is made in the upper inner thighs (possibly into the lower inner thigh), and the excess skin and fat is lifted at the surgeons discretion. He or she will determine how much can safely be removed. Once the excess is removed, the remaining skin is closed with sutures that can be removed in about a week. The type of incision and a patients resulting scar will be determined by the location and amount of excess skin and fat. It may be limited to the upper groin crease or possibly extend to the knee area if this region requires treatment. Like any surgical procedure there are risks and benefits that will be discussed at your consultation. Patients generally return to work two weeks after surgery and can resume strenuous activity within 4 to 6 weeks upon the surgeons approval. Risks of a surgical thigh lift include scarring, wound healing problems, infection, blood or fluid collection, loss of sensation, asymmetry, wrinkling of skin, lumpiness, areas of depression. Nerve damage may cause weakness in foot or leg. Possibility of permanent discoloration. In most cases results are long-lasting, but subject to weight fluctuation. Patients should maintain a steady weight following a thigh lift or any cosmetic contouring surgery. Quick Cash Advance Loan

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ross_Bainbridge]Ross Bainbridge Money is an essential factor for survival. It has become as important as food and water. These days, it may be easier to survive for some time without food. People usually plan and budget their expenses. But, emergencies have their own ways of popping up. Sometimes cash is urgently required to meet some expenses like settling a doctors bill or fixing a house. Some people virtually survive from paycheck to paycheck. Any small but sudden expense may create a crisis in their financial monthly budgets. The best option in such cases would be a short-term personal loan. A quick cash advance loan is nothing but a short-term personal loan. It is known by various names like a payday loan or a post dated check loan. Customers can apply for loan amounts as low as $100. These loans tend to charge very high interest rates, though. The loans are used to generate quick cash between two paychecks. Several documents like photo identification, proof of address and proof of income are required for getting this type of loan approved. The customer usually gives a post-dated check to the lender. These checks includes the amount borrowed added with the interest amount and taxes levied, if any. In return, the lender gives his contract of terms and conditions. The late fees in the case of late payments and the interest rates are usually mentioned in the contract. The customer should read and understand the terms of repayment. The customer is then given the loan amount after verification of documents. Customers generally pay the entire loan amount as soon as they receive the next paycheck. Quick cash advance loans prove to be an affordable option only if they are repaid immediately. Otherwise, it may turn out to be a very costly means of getting money. A quick cash advance loan cannot be a permanent solution to financial woes. Customers take these loans to meet their unexpected financial needs. How to Find Car Wash Fundraiser Volunteers

By Lance Winslow Many non-profit kids groups turn to car wash fundraisers, as they are a favorite past time and are a good way to build camaraderie and raise funds at the same time. Some times getting volunteers to help can be the biggest challenge. After years of sponsoring these events, we have found the secrets to getting volunteers. FINDING VOLUNTEERS How do you get people to volunteer? This is tough. Its usually the same ten percent of the people who do ninety percent of the work. Since obviously you are one of these, and you dont want to be burdensome to the same people who always do all the work, try to get some one new involved. Its a fun assignment and you will be pleasantly surprised to find that people seem to enjoy working at these types of fundraisers more than they do candy sales, bake sales, casino nights, garage sales, etc. People tend to associate car wash fundraisers with fun. To help get volunteers, announce that youre thinking of coordinating a fundraiser. Name three or four truly mundane ideas; Then say "or maybe a car wash"? The first to agree that this is a worthy idea should be co-chairman of this years car wash committee. If they are really excited and extroverted put them in charge of public relations/publicity and recruitment. You will need about four to six people on your committee to do a large fundraiser. Once you get a few volunteers you can ask them to bring a friend and double your staffing requirements. Properly staffed car wash fundraisers are an excellent way to insure success of the car wash. The Healing Arts: 18 Things Healers Learn, #1; That Person Is YOU

By Russ Reina Lets start with what may be the most challenging concept first, for it is the thing which we have been taught to be most afraid: That Person Is You! Theyve got nicknames: Lizards, Turkeys, Skells, Scrotes, a tassel of radio codes, Gomers, Scumbags, Idiots, a plethora of racial epithets, the Terminal CA in bed four, and names youve never thought of but sound funny and ring true. Whether youre in the hospital, ambulance, doctors office, laboratory, massage room, or mechanics bay, theres something the people with whom you are in contact can be called to help you keep your distance. It boils down to one word, them. The funny thing is, when you enter the healing arts you put yourself into the most likely position to experience the truth that we are basically experiencing the same thing, and its called life. There is no them. There is only us. Most often, the realization comes when least expected. There you are, in the role of caregiver, and you lose the sensation of the difference between you and the person youre with. Something in the present rings so true with something that lives inside you that you cannot escape it. This could be called a moment of "unplanned connection" where the barrier between lives evaporates. You suddenly become part of the Great Mystery where, for a brief flash, its all you including him. If, in your work with others you havent yet experienced this, you will. Guaranteed! Often, its not a pretty sight. Working with someone reprehensible, it becomes unavoidable that given a series of events -- custom-designed to hit your own personal hot buttons -- you would crumble close to the same way. Oh, what a grisly reflection! We have been taught to shrug off the experience of Oneness, joke around it, or completely cut off the feelings surrounding the moments impact on us. All that, we are told, is not real. Whats in the drug box, thats real! What makes it harder is we are taught that when you feel the experience of others you cannot ACT in their behalf. The assumption is, feeling the connection will hobble your effectiveness because youll be living in the emotion and not in the moment requiring action. All it takes is the truth of that one experience of Oneness to get the point. When you know this, you cannot un-know it. From then on, unless you learn to embrace and work with the concept, you tend to look for avenues of escape. Why? Because, as Charlie Brown puts it, Pain hurts! and an imposed fear makes you believe that the empathetic pain you feel while with another will never end. In truth, emotional pain is just an experience of the moment. Each moment carries with it a new emotion. If you allow yourself to get stuck on one moment, one emotion, of course you are in the past or future, not in the now. The now is where the action must occur. Suppressing, denying, or avoiding an experience of any sort DOES mean youre stuck because the energy of that emotion, when held back, does not go away, it lurks in the shadows awaiting expression. Then, it becomes a matter of having to apply more and more effort to keep a growing pile of tinder in your gut from igniting. In the process, there is a hardening that goes on that keeps you away from not only that connection, but all connections, the most severe being the connection to yourself. So now what? The understanding that we are connected can live inside of you and be operational without it having to overwhelm you. Acknowledging it will neither disable your ability to function, nor compel you to have to be a Mother Teresa, the Christ, or the Buddha all the time, every time. Rather than resisting emotions of empathy, sympathetic reactions, or the sense of connection -- or even rage and disgust -- allow them to pass through you. Yes, you will experience tinges of fear, sadness, anger, maybe even despair, but practice will show you that in the next moment (and in the most unlikely of circumstances, too!) you will also experience hope, joy and wonder. It is in the resistance of what we call "negative" emotions that the smoldering begins. What you will find is that being human means having a fluid emotional life. Recognizing this in yourself also allows you to work more effectively with others by going with the flow of their emotions moment to moment and working with what is rather than what you want it to be to protect yourself. The act of not resisting the flow of e-motion energy in motion -- will help you to discover new ways to approach every person you deal with. By being willing to notice the ways that you do share a common heartbeat, it will be easier to see and appreciate the mystery of diversity of which you are a part.
