Is Emotional Eating Causing You to Blow Your Healthy Weight Loss Plan?

By Eunice Coughlin Youve done everything right this time. Youre eating lots of salad, fruit, and protein; using only low fat dressings and even staying away from white flour and refined sugar. But thenyou have an argument with your spouse. You are bored, stressed, depressed and giving up. You walk by the pantry and see nothing that will satisfy the sudden urge for sugar, salt, potato chips, candy, or whatever your particular poison of choice. So you go down to the grocery store and find what you need, go home and pig out! Maybe you dont need to go to the store… maybe youve thought ahead because you knew this moment would come and you have a secret cabinet with all kinds of binge eating goodies! Ok, well that might be a little dramatic. But most people have found themselves following a good, healthy diet and all of a sudden, because of some emotional upheaval, theyve found themselves in the middle of an overeating binge. It can really blow your whole healthy eating plan. So whats happening when you find yourself in this situation? And how can you stop emotional eating? First of all, when you go on an emotional eating binge, strong emotions are causing you to experience stress. This is when your body goes into fight or flight response. You either fightor you fly. All your energy is directed towards one of these responses. Cortisol is released and normally, this causes the energy exerted in fighting or flying to be replaced with an increase in appetite. You are supposed to eat to replace the energy burned. However, in modern-day times, we are unable to follow through with the fight or flight response. Everything happens as it is designed to happen, except that instead of energy being burned, it is stuffed and we are left with an urge to eat. So what can you do to stop emotional eating? I have found a very helpful book, Lose It For Life written by Stephen Arterburn and Dr. Linda Mintle, who suggest making a list of alternate activities when you find yourself in such a situation, such as taking a walk, take three deep breaths or call a friend. One other very effective way to battle these urges is to pray. As a Christian, when I find myself having a problem with unpleasant emtions, I seek release and find strength when I turn to God. A moment of prayer can really help you find the balance you need to continue with your healthy weight loss plan. Sometimes we turn to food out of loneliness or boredom. The same technique could apply. Talking to your friend or playing with your dog could be infinitely more interesting than stuffing your face with a cookie. Copyright 2005 by Eunice Coughlin. The Little Things in Life: Food Presentation

By Caley Walsh While it may seem silly, the appearance of a little radish rose on my salad plate has the power to tickle me from head to toe. Maybe it’s my fondness for the concept of edible art. Moreover, can you deny that a pretty dessert or any other dish just seems to taste better? Even the slightest special touches in culinary preparation and presentation transform the mere act of eating into a full-blown aesthetic experience. Sprucing up a buffet for a party or a sit-down meal for guests (or an especially spoiled loved one) is easier than you might think and makes all the difference. People will be truly dazzled by these extra little touches. Here are some ideas to get you started in the art of food presentation. Good luck! Presentation Basics Color- When it comes to color, it’s all about creating contrasts. A dish with a white sauce is going to look boring on a white plate. When it comes to “plating” food, put a few colorful vegetables next to visually bland items like mashed potatoes. Even a dollop of yogurt can look spectacular atop a bowl of split-pea soup!Chargers, the circular settings under plates, are also a great opportunity for color and contrast. They come in all different colors, textures, and materials. Nature- The best food presentation incorporates the beauty of nature. A simple vase of flowers can do so much for a table, but experiment with less common items like pinecones. Fill a vase with crabapples and pinecones for a great-smelling autumn centerpiece. Mix flowers and fruits for especially beautiful and interesting centerpieces. For example, intersperse white flowers with limes in a silver bowl, or combine bright lilies with tropical fruits. While porcelain and glass serving platters are common in food presentation, don’t forget wood! Natural and even exotic woods work beautifully to display items like breads and cheese. Odd Numbers- A good rule of thumb in any type of decorating is that an odd number of items grouped together is more visually attractive. Just as you would, for example, place a group of three pillar candles on the fireplace mantle, keep the same rule of odd numbers in mind when decorating your table or buffet and when garnishing plates.Whiteware- Nothing is as elegant or as easily adaptable as a set of basic whiteware, including white platters, plates, and white linens. You can dress it up or down for different events. On The Plate Smaller is Better- Take a cue from fancy restaurants and create smaller, more elegant portions. Slice vegetables like bell peppers into thin strips. Use plates with a smaller basin for food, but a larger rim to create the illusion of a larger portion. Arrange the food vertically or fan it outward from the center for more artistic arrangements.Garnish- While this may seem obvious, only decorate with edible food. You want people’s taste buds to respond to everything on the plate. Moreover, the garnish should correspond to predominant flavors in the dish. Garnish with sprigs of rosemary for a chicken dish with rosemary in it.Sprinkle- If a food looks boring, sprinkle on some fresh chopped herbs, nuts, or finely chopped vegetables. Squeeze Bottles- Forget the ladle! The big thing with sauces right now is to paint and drizzle designs over your food with a squeeze bottle. Drizzle thin lines of teriyaki sauce back and forth over dumplings, for example. Curls, Roses, and other Edible Accoutrements Butter Curls/RosettesHeat a butter curler under hot water for a moment and pull gently over a stick of firm butter to create curls. Dip in hot water between each curl. Use softened butter and a piping bag with a flower nozzle to create pretty butter flowers. Remember to keep chilled until right before serving!Vegetable CreationsCarrots- Use a vegetable peeler to cut strips of carrot, roll each into a spiral, and secure with a toothpick. Submerge in ice water for several hours and the carrot strip will remain curled after removing the toothpick. Cherry Tomatoes- To create a cherry tomato flower, cut a small X on the blossom side of a cherry tomato. Partially peel back the tomato skin in the four sections with a sharp knife to make four petals. Cucumber/Zucchini- Create fluting along a cucumber or zucchini slice with a fork. Green Onions- For green onion “brushes,” cut the roots and most of the top portion from a green onion and make several cuts at both ends to produce a fringe. After being submerged in ice water for a couple hours, the onion ends will curl back like brushes. Leeks- Make pretty leek “asters” by first cutting off the roots and the bottom a little. Cut into 3-4 cm parts. Using a sharp knife, make many cuts along leek but don’t split the bottom. Soak the leeks in cold water for a day and the flowers will curl out. Sprinkle with beet juice for a touch of color.Radish- Slice small triangles all around the radish and peel back the red skin to create flower petals. Or, make several cuts radiating out from the top center of the radish, soak in cold water, and the radish will “open” on its own. For a cute and simple trick, slice the radish very thin and use the round slices as petals for a flat flower. You can use a carrot slice for the center of the flower and scallions or cucumber peel for the stem.Sweet TouchesChocolate- Let a bar of chocolate come to room temperature and carefully draw a vegetable peeler along the bar to create long curling strips. Use the narrow side to create thin curls and the broad side to make bigger curls. To make chocolate leaves, find some nontoxic, broad leaves such as mint, rose, or lemon. Brush melted semi-sweet chocolate on the underside of the leaves, wiping off any that runs to the front of the leaves. Repeat layers of chocolate to make sturdier leaves. Place chocolate leaves, chocolate side up, on a baking sheet lined with wax paper, and freeze until hard. Then, simply peel away the real leaf from the chocolate leaf. Fruit- Make strawberry fans with stemmed strawberries. Simply cut many, small slices into the strawberry almost to the green stem but not quite through and then fan out the strawberry. Or for an easier trick, brush fresh fruit with a mixture of water and meringue powder, and then immediately sprinkle with (granulated) sugar for a frosted look. Sugar- Powdered sugar (or cocoa powder) can easily create designs on top of brownies or a cake. Cut out a design from a piece of sturdy paper, such as swirls or stars, and then lay the piece of paper over the dessert. Sift the powder on top and then carefully remove the paper. Voila! Detox Diet

By Sharon G.Price A detox diet is a diet where the individual makes a complete change in their consumption habits so that the body gets detoxified by removing toxins and contaminants. With a detox diet, it is possible to improve health, energy, digestion, mental state, your resistance to disease and even experience weight loss. The modifications that you have to make in detox diet includes fasting with juice fasting and water fasting, increasing the consumption of fish like salmon, restriction in calorie intake and using a herbal detox or master cleanse called the lemonade diet. Most important, a detox diet calls for more of fruits and vegetables in ones food intake, limitations in processed food and the elimination of alcohol and smoking. The main reason people go on a detox diet is because a human body ingests lots of water, food and air in a day. It is very possible that fat soluble chemicals existing in them get deposited in the cells of the body. With a poor diet, the human body cannot detoxify these chemicals and this leads to a further build up of toxic waste in the body which in turn leads to illnesses, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies and a weak metabolism. Once you go on a detox diet, you tend to experience improved energy, have regular bowel movements, find an increase in concentration and clarity in life, improvement in your digestion and clearer skin. However before you go on a detox diet, it is better that you consult with your doctor to see if the detox diet is appropriate for you. Nursing women, children and pregnant women should never go on a detox diet. People with anemia, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, cancer, low blood pressure and with additions to drugs and alcohol should not go on a detox diet unless advised by the doctor. Like all good things in life, a detox diet too has its side effects of which the most common one is a headache that starts within a few days of the start of the detox diet. This is often due to the sudden quitting of caffeine. This is why practitioners often suggest a gradual stopping of caffeine instead of a sudden stop. In fact, some people take time off for a detox diet or start it on Friday night to last the weekend. Some people go through a bout of diarrhea because of dehydration and a loss of electrolyte while there are some people who increase their fiber intake, but dont drink sufficient water. This in turn leads to constipation. Prolonged use of a detox diet can lead to a deficiency of nutrients, especially proteins and calcium as some detox diets omit animal products. Other side effects of the detox diet include acne, weight loss, hunger, irritability and tiredness. If you find any worsening of these symptoms when on a detox diet, it is advised to visit a qualified health professional immediately. You never know if these symptoms had arisen because of the detox diet or because of some other underlying cause as the symptoms of some diseases like cancer similar to the side effects of a detox diet. http://www.letsdetox.com is an informative site relating to detoxing, detox kits, detox, weight loss and cleansing products. http://www.letsdetox.com also has information on how to lose weight using a detox program. Static Magnetic Therapy: Does It Really Work?

By Jeanette Conner Recently, a number of articles have been published on static magnetic therapy. Static magnetic therapy is the placement of a magnet field on or near the body to enhance healing, relieve pain and improve body function. The idea of magnetism is not new. Early Chinese medical literature claimed healing properties for lodestrone, a naturally magnetic mineral. For centuries, static magnetic therapy has been used by eastern practitioners to relieve pain and swelling, and to induce healing. Since the 1950s, numerous Japanese studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of magnetic fields for treating various conditions. Many magnetic devices are registered with the Japanese Welfare Ministry as medical devices, after undergoing clinical testing at accredited medical institutions to verify their safety and effectiveness. For many years, the Magnetic Health Science Foundation has been meeting annually in Japan to report on the growing body of evidence of the scientific technology of magnetic research. To date, there are now over 300 published articles on magnetic research. But, do magnets really work? The answer may lie in understanding the laws of physics, and in reviewing recent scientific evidence. We are energetic beings surrounded by naturally generated electromagnetic energy, fields of energy which are created by the spinning and moving of electrons and charged particles within the cell. Some of the early awareness of the importance of electromagnetic energy fields was discovered when the Russian cosmonauts first spent long periods of time on board the Mir space station; they became sick. Their illnesses appeared to be caused by the lack of contact with the magnetic field surrounding the earth. Once the Russian space station was equipped with a magnetism generator, the symptoms disappeared. All cells within the body are ordered by magnetism; the atoms and molecules are tiny magnets with a positive and negative pole. All communication within the body occurs through electric currents and the electromagnetic frequencies they generate. According to the laws of physics, the first law of electromagnetism states that if an electron or other charged particle is moving it generates a magnetic field. The corollary to this rule is that if an electron or charged particle encounters a magnetic field it must move. So how does this apply to magnetic therapy, healing, and pain? When a person is injured, the body immediately reacts to restore the body to its natural balanced state. In brief, the injured tissue produces a chemical reaction whereby acids are released and chemicals are brought to the injured site to begin a healing process. This chemical reaction leads to swelling which causes pain. The theory is that when a magnetic field is placed at or near the injured site the electromagnetic field induces a current or charge in the tissues in the body. This charge causes the toxins (acids and other chemicals) to move, the toxins are removed and excreted, and a natural healing state ensues. As this change occurs, the blood flow to the injured site is improved, the swelling is reduced, and pain is alleviated. Some scientists believe that magnetic therapy causes the body to dispose of waste materials (toxins) more quickly and speeds up the healing process. Numerous studies have been conducted on the effects of static magnetic therapy in Asia and Europe. Recently, scientists in the US have begun reporting their results of the effectiveness of magnetic fields. Magnetic therapy has been found to be effective in alleviating burning, numbness and tingling, and exercise induced foot pain in patients with diabetic neuropathy (Weintraub 1998, 1999, 2003); in alleviating neuropathic pain in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (Weintraub & Cole 2000); in alleviating pain in people suffering from osteoarthritis in the knees and hips (Harlow 2004, Hinman 2002, Pipitone 2001, Wosko 2004); and in other chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (Segal 2001), fibromyalgia (Alfono 2001, Thomas 2001) and chronic back pain (Collacott 2000). Although the scientific research in the United States is still in the early stages compared to the Asian and European studies, static magnetic therapy has been shown to have no detrimental side effects and has great promise for those suffering from chronic painful conditions. Recover from Candida by Taking this Oil?

By John Goh Candida or candidiasis is an infection by Candida Albican - Albicans, a type of yeast. Moderate amounts of candida live in every one of us without causing any harm. But when given free rein to grow unchecked, candida can change into its fungal form and spore through the intestinal wall into the rest of the body. Once through, it rampages around the body producing a multitude of symptoms. Symptoms of candida include infections of the mouth, vagina, nose, and respiratory system. Candida has been found to produce 79 distinct toxins. Victims of candida may experience pain, headaches, migraines, extreme fatigue, psoriasis, muscles aches, joint pains and arthritis. Symptoms in the intestines include bloatedness, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence and itchy anus. Recurring fungal skin infections like athletes foot, jock itch, ringworm etc are typical symptoms too. Vaginal thrush, which many women suffer from, is commonly caused by candida invading the vagina. The conditions candida likes best are warm, moist, airless parts of the body. This is why the vagina is the most common site for candida infection. Other areas of the body which are prone to candida infection include the groin, the mouth, and the nappy area in babies. Candida thrives on foods that contain carbohydrates and sugar, particularly sugar as yeast loves sugar. Taking antibiotics, steroids, or oral contraceptives will kill off the “good” bacteria in the intestine, which allows candida to change into its fungal form. Stress contributes to its proliferation. And, because of its adaptability, candida is easily transmitted from person to person in a family. Hundreds of thousands of people have systemic or entire body candida infections without realizing it. Systemic infections are infections in which candida grows out of control overrunning the digestive tract and affecting the entire body, including the reproductive system. However, most doctors treat candida like it was a localized problem. Anti-candida creams can treat localized infections like vagina itching. However, yeast infections are persistent and often recur. If you have a whole body candida infection, these creams only treat the infections locally and temporarily. Fungal infections of one sort or another will flare up again, becoming an ongoing nuisance. The solution for candida whole body infection is to cut sugar from your diet and to take caprylic acid. Caprylic acid, a medium chain acid derived from coconut oil, is one of the most potent non-drug or natural yeast-fighting substances. It is very effective against candida and other forms of fungi. Caprylic acid is commonly sold in combination with anti-fungal herbs in dietary supplements for patients with yeast infections. Fungal infections that have lasted for months can clear up in a matter of days using caprylic acid and a little coconut oil. Polynesian women who eat their traditional coconut-based diet, rarely get yeast infections. The medium chain acids in coconut oil have anti-fungal properties and kill candida and other fungi in the intestinal tract, further supporting a healthy intestinal environment. Eating coconut oil on a regular basis, helps to keep candida at bay. Collecting Autographs Can be Fun

By Jennifer Maskill As I browse EBay, it is quite sad to see how many signed items there are for sale on there these days. Most of them if you look closer arent even real. They are either copied printouts of the real thing or are just out and out fakes. To me, this takes all the fun out of collecting. To me collecting autographs isnt about monetary value, it is about personal and sentimental value. I started collecting 23 years ago. I was watching Blue Peter and I wondered to myself if it would be possible to get signed pictures of the team. So I wrote my letter and popped it in the post, then a couple of weeks later my SAE came back packed with pictures and lots of other bits and pieces. From then I was hooked. I wrote off to all my favourite TV shows and quickly filled up 1, 2 even 3 photo albums. To make TTM (Through the mail) collecting the most fun, you should only write to stars you like and admire. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your hobby. 1) Keep your letter short. If your handwriting isnt the best then it is perfectly acceptable to type it out but always sign your name in person at the end. 2) Always send an SAE (Stamped Addressed envelope) this saves the celeb time in replying to you as they can just sign your picture, seal it up and send it away. 3) Try to send your own picture so that the item will be unique to you and also you will know that the subject has taken the time to sit down and sign it especially for you and not just thrown a ready done one in there. 4) Dont take liberties. I think it is OK to ask for a couple of photos to be signed but not a whole wad of them. 5) Dont tell your life story in your letter, just a paragraph about what you like best about the person you are writing to will do. 6) Dont forget to keep track of the dates that you sent your letters. This will give you an idea of how long it had taken to reply. Dont worry if it takes a few months, the more popular the Celebrity, the longer it will take. Just be patient. There are lots of resources online for finding addresses for celebs. Some sites have a subscription to join but if you look hard enough you will find many addresses for free. Most of the time you can write to stars through the TV Company that they are working for but there are lots of resources out there for Agents and managers addresses. Also for Sports stars you can write to them through their sports club. You will find that most big sports clubs/TV companies/Agents are geared up for receiving fan mail and have a procedure for dealing with it. A couple of sites to get you started http://ukautographs.proboards59.com/ http://www.stefansautographs.ch/01.Actresses.htm/ So get writing and have fun with itThere is no stopping you now!! I have been collecting autographs since I was 13 and just getting excited about it again as there is a whole new generation of actors and footballers out there. http://jembielife.blogspot.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jennifer_Maskill http://EzineArticles.com/?Collecting-Autographs-Can-be-Fun&id=142211 male infertility treatments increase production of semen how to increase semen count clomid and male infertility

Self-Knowledge: The Key To Finding The Right Career Direction

By Atul Mathur Your career, like any journey, has a beginning, an end and a direction. For many people, the present direction of the career is probably not a result of entirely their own choices. If, for some reason, you are not happy with the direction of your career, there is a way out: Take charge of your career and change its direction. 1. Know yourself Has it happened with you that after desperately looking for something (e.g., keys) all over the place, you eventually found it right in your pocket or drawer? That’s exactly the case with finding a new career direction. Usually, we try to search for a new career direction by looking all around, for example, at hot jobs, emerging fields, prestigious companies, friend’s career, what’s safe and so on. Ironically, we fail to look for the answer where it actually lies: inside us. The secret of finding the right career direction is not to look outside but to look inside. Know yourself and you will automatically know the right direction for your career. 2. Dig deeper Most people define themselves is terms of what they write in their resumes. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. To really know yourself, dig deeper and uncover your: (a) Strengths (b) Personality (c) Values (d) Interests (a) Strengths Your strength is what you do well and enjoy doing it. We never fail to admire strengths in top athletes, painters, writers, leaders but fail to ask “What is my strength?” Strengths have a solid connection with a person’s career. According to Peter Drucker, a person can only perform from his strength. In other words, mediocrity is guaranteed if we fail to use our strengths. So know your strengths and get into a career that allows you to leverage your strengths to the maximum. Discover your strengths by asking: What am I good at and also enjoy doing? What makes me feel energized? What comes naturally and easily to me? (b) Personality Personality is the sum total of a person’s behavioral, temperamental and emotional traits. For example, some people are by nature extrovert and enjoy meeting other people. But some people are born introvert and feel more comfortable when left alone. Studies show a direct link between a person’s personality and his career. Indeed, if you are an extrovert person, you would do well in roles such as sales, marketing, public relations. But an introvert person would be better off in roles that do not require public dealing. To know your personality in detail and its implications on your career, appear at personality tests such as Myers Briggs Test Instrument (MBTI). (c) Values Values are what you consider important and valuable. Values differ from person to person and can range from things like money, prestige and power to more subtle things like respect, harmony and independence. Your values hint towards the kind of work that will suit you. For example, if you value “achievement, “you would do well in roles that regularly throw challenges at you. Someone else, however, may value “helping others” and, therefore, would do well in occupations that provide an opportunity to serve others. To know your values, ask yourself what is important to you, make a list and prioritize the items. You can also use value inventories on the Internet to identify your values. (d) Interests Should the work be interesting? Yes, for an important reason: If your work arouses your interest, you are going to do well. History shows that great achievers always pursued what fascinated them. Akio Morita shunned the option of joining the family business of sake brewing to pursue what he was interested in: an electronics start-up. And he created Sony. Doing the work that interests you can have a lasting impact on your career. To uncover your interests, find out what fascinates you and draws your attention. Knowing your strengths, personality, values and interests is like having a compass with its needle pointing towards the right direction for your career. About The Author Atul Mathur 2004. Teak Garden Furniture

By Marcus Peterson Superbly crafted teak garden furniture adds beauty and elegance to any garden. It is also a symbol of luxury and affluence. Garden furniture may be permanent or temporary. Temporary garden furniture is generally made from lightweight materials to make it easy to move. Permanent garden furniture is rarely moved. It is selected for its looks first, then its comfort. Since teak is the most durable of all hardwoods, most customers prefer garden furniture made from teak wood. Even though it is expensive, the demand for teak garden furniture is growing year by year. Increase in demand has resulted in new and novel designs in teak garden furniture. Teak garden furniture includes teak tables, teak chairs, folding chairs and armchairs, teak stacking chairs, teak recliner chairs, sun loungers, teak steamers, teak benches, garden hammocks, garden benches, memorial benches, and park benches. Tastefully chosen teak garden furniture can transform a commonplace garden into a unique one. While purchasing garden furniture, there are several factors to be considered. It should be long lasting and must have a timeless style. Its style should complement the design and atmosphere of the garden. Comfort can be a criterion in the selection. Student Loans - A Definitive Guide

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steve_Fleming]Steve Fleming Student loans are one of those things that we would all like to do without. These days however all to often students do not have the means (parental or otherwise) to fund either tuition fees, course materials or general living expenses and find themselves having to apply for student loans. ACS services many of the loans that available through collages and universities, as they tend to be one of the more efficient ways for the establishments to provide loans for their students. Student Loans can be a great help in allowing you to study to improve your prospects in the marketplace and can be viewed, in this light, as a positive contribution to your future. The main thing when considering applying for student loans is to make sure that you get the best deal possible for your particular needs. It is worth spending some time researching. It may also be worth seeking the advice of a professional in the field. A little time spent in this way can save you a great deal of money in the long run. There are generally two types of student loans that are funded by the government. The Federal Direct Student Loan Program can take the form of a loan that is given to the parent of the student, or directly to the student. The other main type of student loan is the Federal Family Education Loan program. These loans are slightly different in that although they are underwritten by the federal government (against the loan not being repaid), they are actually provided by private and public lenders. These can be banks, saving associations and credit companies very often through ACS or Affiliated computer Services. If yours or your familys income falls below a certain level, then you may qualify for a subsidized student loan. This can be a considerable saving and if you think that you may qualify, then it is definitely worth applying. If you are awarded a subsidized student loan then the government will pay the interest on your loan to help offset the cost of your studies. This may not mean a great deal when you are studying, but when you start to pay the loan back after graduation it will have a beneficial effect on your payments. Many who do not qualify for subsidized student loans prefer to opt for private student loans. It is essential to look around carefully to find the best rates available, as private companies and credit unions fund these and the rates can vary considerably. It is possible that as these are private student loans you may need a cosignatory to enable you to complete the application. When you graduate there is normally a 6-month grace to allow the student to find a job before the payments commence. Another option for your student loan is the College Board Extra Credit Loan. Theses are actually run by the colleges themselves and can be an expensive way of getting a student loan. But if all else fails they may be worth considering. If it is an unsubsidized loan that you are applying for, then you can also apply to most banks, as they can offer state funded student loans. It is also possible with some to get a discount for regular payments that are on time. Student loans are a great way to fund your education and it is worth exploring in depth, which of the options would suit you best. It is possible to get great savings, depending on the type of loan you are looking for, if you shop around. So it is worth, before you start borrowing, spending a little time looking for the best deal. It will pay you dividends in they long run and that is worth a little effort.
